Dog Chicken Predator Guide
Dogs are easy to underestimate because they may be familiar, friendly, or part of the household. For chickens, the risk is not only an aggressive dog; excitement, chasing, pawing, or one quick grab can cause serious injury.
Main risk
A dog does not need to be wild to injure chickens. Chasing, pawing, or grabbing can be enough.
Best defenses
Physical separation, secure fencing, supervised introductions, and a backup plan for doors or gates left open. Training helps, but it should not be treated as the only barrier between a dog and a flock.
Neighbor dogs
Loose dogs can test fences, gates, and weak run panels quickly. A friendly neighbor dog can still chase chickens if it gets excited or slips through a weak spot.
Dog checklist
- Do not leave dogs and chickens together unsupervised.
- Check gates and low fence gaps.
- Use a secure run for outdoor time.
- Take repeated chasing seriously before injury.
