Winter Chicken Prep Checklist
Winter prep is less about making chickens cozy and more about keeping them dry, watered, ventilated, and easy to care for when chores get harder.
Water first
Pick a water routine before the first deep freeze. Heated bases, frequent swaps, or protected stations can all work, but the plan has to survive a rushed morning.
Dry air beats sealed air
Do not close every opening because the coop feels cold to you. Moisture needs a way out above roost height.
Make chores possible
Snow, ice, mud, and short daylight make small annoyances bigger. Make sure doors open and feed is reachable.
Winter prep list
- Water plan tested.
- Dry bedding ready.
- Ventilation open above roost level.
- Wind blocked without sealing the coop tight.
- Feed stored where you can reach it safely.
- Doors and latches work in cold weather.
