Heat Wave Chicken Checklist
A heat wave checklist helps you act before chickens show serious stress. The goal is to keep water accessible, shade available, airflow moving, and chores calm during the hottest hours.
Before the heat peaks
- Fill all waterers early.
- Add a second or third water station in shade.
- Check that shade covers the run in the afternoon.
- Open safe ventilation without creating predator gaps.
- Remove wet feed or anything that may sour.
During the hottest hours
| Check | What to look for | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Water | Warm, empty, or dirty water | Refresh and shade it |
| Bird behavior | Heavy panting or weakness | Cool the environment quickly |
| Run shade | Birds crowded in one spot | Add temporary shade |
| Coop | Hot, stale air | Improve safe airflow |
What to avoid
Do not chase, handle, transport, or crowd birds during peak heat unless there is a clear emergency. Stress can make heat problems worse.
Evening reset
After the temperature drops, refill water, check birds that looked stressed, remove spoiled feed, and make sure the coop is not holding heat overnight.

Bottom line
During a heat wave, keep the flock cool, hydrated, and calm. Water and shade need to be ready before the birds are already struggling.
